John Moore Associates President Brian Cochran shared his perspective on the latest unemployment numbers to be released. He expresses his concerns about public policy decisions made in reaction to the pandemic, including unemployment benefits. Brian said, “Are we programming people not to return to work? He said, “God designed us to work. I like to think of the Bible as a recipe book. It gives us all the ingredients for human thriving. One of those ingredients is labor or work. When people are not working, they tend not to thrive.”

Desiree Woodland is the Founder of Breaking the Silence New Mexico. Volunteer Board Member Jodie Hix joins Desiree on this episode to talk about mental illness and suicide. Desiree started Breaking the Silence in New Mexico (501(c)3 not for profit) after her son Ryan took his own life as a teenager.   The agency promotes mental health literacy, advocacy, and well-being for teens, youth, and adults through education, personal stories, and the arts.  The core programs share the goal of ending the stigma, shame, silence, and secrecy surrounding mental illness and suicide. Holly Slade, Founder of Feed New Mexico Kids, said, “Our goal is to get children fed!”  The ministry of Feed New Mexico Kids is hosting the “FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN FEED NEW MEXICO KIDS“ event to educate the faith community and business owners to help fight childhood hunger in New Mexico.  The event is FREE! 

Food Insecurity is not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Holly said, “We as a community can not stick our heads in the sand any longer and think that our crime rates, our gangs, and all of that are disassociated from hunger.”

Feed New Mexico Kids will train your Church or volunteer group to purchase food,  pack, and distribute “snack packs” to help children have food for the weekends where you live! Marcy is the New Mexico Operations Manager for Joni and Friends New Mexico. Paul Faculjak is the former Area Director and the instructor for the Beyond Suffering Class beginning on October 20, 2021. Paul will be answering questions like, “Have you ever suffered physically, emotionally, or spiritually and wondered why? Do you have family members or friends with disabilities and struggle to know what to say or how to act around them? Paul said, “This material is targeting Church leaders, Pastors, volunteers, and family members who want to understand God’s Word about suffering and disability, the Churches responsibility according to scripture, and then the practical tools and know-how to be inclusive individuals with disabilities.”

Marcy details how Joni and Friends are helping renew and refresh people living with disabilities, their families, and their caregivers with fun projects like the “Respite Night” and “Warrior Getaway” coming up.  Respite Night is  Friday night, October 15, 2021, at Grace Church. November 12-15, 2021, the ministry hosts a “Warrior Getaway” at Lonetree Camps in Capitan, NM. He said, “Sometimes people need that calming presence because of turmoil in their lives. God wants us to live without fear. Finances often create fear and uncertainty in people’s lives. People are not generous when they are fearful. Generosity and fear do not coexist. If we can remove that fear, it helps people be more content, more at peace, and more generous.”
