Tracy Rodden and Cindi Tucker join ABQ Connect to discuss the pressing issue of childhood hunger in New Mexico and how local communities are responding. New Mexico tragically leads the nation in childhood hunger, with over 3,700 students in Albuquerque Public Schools classified as unhoused. Out of more than 91,000 students in Albuquerque public traditional and charter schools, thousands face food insecurity every week.
The effects of this crisis are far-reaching. Food insecurity has a significant impact on students’ attendance, concentration, and academic performance. And while the problem is severe in Albuquerque, similar struggles exist in cities across the state. Tracy and Cindi highlight the work of Feed New Mexico Kids, a ministry working to ensure children have food on the weekends. According to Tracy, a key part of the solution involves local churches and businesses partnering with nearby schools. Feed New Mexico, kids help church’s members, business people, and individuals put together “snack packs,” a one-gallon zip-close bag with non-perishable, easy-open, single-serve food items. This food is delivered to schools each week and discreetly given to students so they have food for the weekend!
